Albany Youth Support Association (AYSA) in collaboration with SCOPE film + media workshops have joined forces to bring a unique and exciting event to the Great Southern…

it’s the Risky Shorts Youth Film Festival.

Risky Shorts is a short film festival for young people 12-25yrs across the Great Southern.

To help set their film ideas in motion, young filmmakers are invited to apply for one of five small grants of $200.00 each to assist them with some of the costs of making a short film.

We are asking for young people to submit grant applications before applications close on Monday 20th May.

The application process is simple, consisting of a one-page document that asks for your details and a description of your film idea, and successful grant applicants will be notified on Friday 24th May.

While only five grants will be available, all young people are encouraged to create and enter a short (between 2-8mins) film based around the theme ‘home’.

All entrants (even if they did not receive a grant) will be considered for inclusion in the Risky Shorts film festival event and we will invite submissions for films starting in June, more information will be released about how to submit your film at a later date.

Selected films will culminate in an exciting film festival in screened August this year, films will be judged by a panel of judges from near and far and cash and prizes will be up for grabs.

Risky Shorts Coordinator Kerry Shaw says the event will be like nothing seen before in the Great Southern.

“It is very exciting because we are investing the time and energy we think young people deserve to enable them to showcase their talent, skills and creativity to the wider community. At the same time, providing all young people with the opportunity to learn new skills and get involved using the mediums of film and storytelling as a platform for their voice to be heard. The theme of ‘home‘ is relevant to all young people and films can take on any genre so long as they incorporate this theme, how it is interpreted, is of course up to the young film makers themselves.”

Risky Shorts Film Festival will be held during Homeless persons week on Saturday 10th August.

Further details about how you can submit a short film and the Risky Shorts film festival event will be released after the successful grant applicants are notified on Friday 24th May.

To request an application pack,please contact Kerry Shaw 0405 909 439 create.empower@yahoo.com.au

In the mean time young people can start working on their grant applications and short films.

Director Jean-Marc Vallee | french with subtitles | Drama | 120 min | MA15+

Café de Flore is a love story about people separated by time and place but connected in profound and mysterious ways. Atmospheric, fantastical, tragic and hopeful, the film chronicles the parallel fates of Jacqueline (Vanessa Paradis), a young mother with a disabled son in 1960s Paris, and Antoine (Kevin Parent), a recently divorced, successful DJ in present day Montreal. What binds the two stories together is love – euphoric, obsessive, tragic, youthful, timeless love.

“I think it’s been beautifully shot, beautifully performed and really heartwrenching… I loved this film.” Margaret Pomeranz, At The Movies.

The Revelation Perth International Film Festival regional program Rev on the Road announces its Southwest program of 10 feature film titles, one of Australia’s most recognised faces from the big and small screen, screenings of locally based films and one of cinemas classic titles with a live score.

Travelling to Albany and Esperance will be special guest Steve Bisley. Star of some of Australia’s most well known feature films (Mad Max, The Big Steal, Silver City) and television series (Water Rats, Police Rescue, Sea Patrol, Frontline), Steve will be presenting the Australian classic Mad Max.

“When I was asked to come on board for the Revelation Perth International Film Festival tour to Esperance and Albany, I had no hesitation in saying YES! Not only do I get a chance to see a collection of wonderful films, I get a chance to reconnect with the people of Southern WA who were so generous to me on my last visit. This is a great part of Australia and I look forward to being there in mid September“ says Steve.

Other guests include Perth band Viola Dana, who will provide a specially composed musical accompaniment to the 1926 Buster Keaton classic The General. Combined with Viola Dana’s wonderful mix of bluegrass and jazz sounds alongside this still remarkably fresh film, Rev on the Road promises an experience that will bring audiences to their feet and keep a smile on their face for days.

Other titles presented in the diverse international program include:

The stunning 1970 documenting the ill-fated Altamont performance by the Rolling Stones – Gimme Shelter. One of the most gripping documentaries on the film festival circuit, The Imposter. The very beautiful Japanese cult kids film Komaneko the Curious Cat. A specially curated program of brand new international short animations (Esperance only). One of the most acclaimed new independent feature films released this year, My Sister’s Sister (Albany only). The bittersweet Irish coming of age film My Brothers. The surprise smash hit horror film The Cabin in the Woods (Albany only). A great Australian vampire film that goes all the way, The Caretaker (Esperance only).

To cap off this caravan of international cinematic delights, and in conjunction with ABC Open, Rev on the Road presents the Rev on the Road Awards with cash and other prizes of $6,000 in each location.

“We’re very overjoyed with this program and the way the communities have backed it” says Rev on the Road director Richard Sowada, “it’s high quality, vibrant, unique and surprising – and that’s hard to do.”

Rev on the Road is supported by the State Government through Eventscorp’s Regional Events Program, which is funded by Royalties for Regions.
