All of the hard work by the GSFI team paid off for an enjoyable evening at the Town hall.
Albany was the only centre, outside of Perth, to have a showing as part of the International Revelation Film festival. With Perth crowds growing a massive 40% in numbers this year, we could not believe our small crowd of only 120.
Where was everyone?
Despite this, the evening was a great success. With the tunes of Minute 36 and a pre film drink, a fabulous atmosphere set for the night.
The Family Jams was one of those documentary you either loved or really disliked. We certainly received some mixed reviews of what people thought and how they enjoyed the film. We have no doubt however, those Devendra Banhart and Joanna Newsom fans enjoyed quite a treat.
Stingray Sam certainly proved the favourite, and if you missed it…you really missed out on a great laugh. Another fantastic film from Cory McAbee, taking the viewers on a wild ride of sci-fi dystopia and classic western. I can still here the songs!

These short film workshops were a great opportunity to engage South West Filmmaker, Steve Tribbeck of TribbeckMedia, to teach Noongar young people in the learning process of how to: use film equipment, techniques of good filming, basic editing process of how to make a short film, and the importance of recording Noongar stories through film.

The workshops engaged 9 young people Noongar and Wagjella (non-Aboriginal)
which is a valuable process to fostering reconciliation and sharing of the Noongar culture.

The young people who participated in these workshops conducted interviews with local male and female Elders on Mt Melville hill which provided a magic backdrop of landscape of Albany.
Steve, from Tribbeck Media, will produce a 6 minute short film called: “Moort Boodja Minang (Family Land & Country) Noongar Minang Country Keeping it alive through story”
The workshops were funded through the Southern Edge Arts’ Wanginining Koorts Indigenous Performing Arts Project, with in-kind support from GSFI, for the use of film equipment and PCYC for the use of the bus, to get out to significant areas around Albany to shoot and record sound.
GSFI are very proud to present the premier of this amazing short film with our Over The Fence Comedy Film Festival at the Albany Town Hall on September 11

Over 3 weekends in June and July, 4 eager film enthusiasts delved into the world of editing. Under the guidance of professional editor and filmmaker Peter Pritchard, the participants took part in a Final Cut Pro workshop that culminated in them creating a 2-3 minute BMX bike video. Final Cut Pro is industry standard editing software that is used for all kinds of production including feature films. All the participants had a rewarding time making use of the vast array of special effects and tools on offer to make their videos “sing”.
